General Pre-Sales
Questions
- What type of servers will
my site be hosted on?
All new Dynerhost accounts are hosted on Red Hat Linux servers running
the Apache web server. The servers are Intel based (P3 or P4 class)
with redundant disk storage, and at least 1GB of memory. All server
also include 100MB ethernet connections to a switched Gigabit network
to ensure optimal performance.
- What type of control panel
is provided with my site?
Dynerhost has partnered with cpanel to provide a control panel that
we feel is a leader in the industry. As a site owner, you will be in
complete control of your site and can even manage files and directories
directly from your control panel.
- How reliable is Dynerhost's
connection to the Internet?
Dynerhost currently maintains network connectivity through five different
vendors (Time Warner, Verio, Savvis, ELI, and Cogent) to ensure maximum
performance and reliability.
- Can I pay for my hosting
with a check?
Yes. If you wish to pay by check we only ask that you choose an annual
plan and contact us prior to placing your order. Use our contact form
for more information.
- How quickly will my account
be set up for me to use?
Generally your account will be set up within a few hours, however we
guarantee that your site will be up within 24 hours or your first month
is on us. Once you receive your welcome email detailing your IP address
and login information, you can immediately begin uploading your site.
- Does Dynerhost back up my
site for me?
By default, all servers are backed nightly to a separate hard drive
on each server for Dynerhost purpose only. We do not back up our servers
so that we can provide restore services to our clients. It is your
responsibility to ensure that your data is backed up each night. Please
be advised that we do not backup your e-mail data in our nightly backups.
You also have the ability to back up your site information as often
as you like through your control panel. In the event that we need to
restore our servers we cannot guarantee the stability of your data.
- How does the 30-day money
back guarantee work?
It's simple. If for any reason during the first 30 days, you are not
completely satisfied with our services, we will cancel your account
and refund 100% of your money. The only exception to this policy exists
when a user is found to be disregarding Dynerhost's Acceptable Use
Policy. In this case, the account will be disconnected, and no refund
will be issued.
- Can I register my domain
name with Dynerhost?
Yes. We do offer domain registration through our partnership with enom.com.
This can be accessed via our homepage. It is important to note that
regardless of where you host your site you will need to enter the correct
name server information into your record for your site to display using
the domain name. Currently this information is:
Nameserver / IP Address
ns1.Dynerhost / 138.121.58.197
ns2.Dynerhost / 138.121.58.198
Please note that the name servers do not include the dash (-) as in
our domain name.

Getting Started
- Now that I have an account
. . . what next?
The first thing you should do is log into your control panel and change
your administrator password. This ensures that you are the only one
with access to your control panel. You can access your control panel
at http://www.yourdomainname.com/cpanel
- How do I install Frontpage
extensions?
Hopefully you chose Frontpage extensions when you signed up. If not,
and you have found that you will need Frontpage extensions, please
email support@dynerhost and we will have them added to your site.
Likewise, if you need to remove the Frontpage extensions, send a request
to support@dynerhost.
- When I log in by FTP, where
do I upload the files for my web site?
Files for the main web site must go in the "/var/www/html/" directory.
When you first log in via FTP, you will be in the your user's directory.
You will notice a directory called "mainwebsite_html". This directory
is an alias for /var/www/html/. You will also notice a directory called "mainwebsite_cgi".
This is where you will put any cgi scripts that you need to execute.
This directory is accessible on the web at http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin.
- Basic Troubleshooting
All files are case sensitive. In order to make it easy on your visitors,
we recommend that you used lower-case throughout your site.
If you find cgi-scripts are not performing correctly, first check the
path to perl, and also be sure that you uploaded them in ASCII format.
If they are still not working, be sure your permissions are set correctly.
Most cgi scripts should be set to 755. As a final measure, you can
check with support. It is important to note however that due to the
opensource nature and vast number of Perl scripts, dynerhost can not
officially support individual scripts other than those provided with
your account. If you are unable to get help in any of the above ways,
it is best to contact the script creator.
By default any file named index.html, index.htm, index.php or default.html
will display automatically in the given folder. A good example of this
is the index.html file that displays when you connect to http://www.yourdomain.com.
- When I try to access my domain
in my browser, I receive an error.
This is usually caused when the domain information has not been populated
across the Internet yet. After you register a domain, it can take up
to 72 hours for the domain to be available. In the mean time you can
access your website via the address given in your welcome message.
Be sure to also check that your name servers are set correctly in your
DNS record.
- Where do I install cgi scripts?
By default, your account will be set up to run cgi (Perl) scripts in
the cgi-bin directory. When you ftp into your site, this directory
will be aliased to "mainwebsite_cgi" which translates to "/var/www/cgi-bin".
It is probably a good idea to use subdirectories within the cgi-bin
directory to keep your scripts organized.
Your cgi-bin directories absolute path (required in some instances)
is '/home/virtual/yourdomain.com/var/www/cgi-bin'
It can be accessed through the web at 'http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin
The path to perl is '#!/usr/bin/perl'
Be sure to chmod all scripts to 755 or 775 for them to run correctly.
This can be accomplished by most FTP programs such as wsFTP.
- How do I make my web site
accessible by the domain name?
There are two scenarios where this is applicable. When you sign up
for a dynerhost account, you are either creating a brand new website
or transferring from another host. In either case, one of the first
things that we do when creating your account is add your DNS records
to our nameservers. All you need to do to make your website accessible
through the domain name, is change your DNS record (with your registrar)
to point to the dynerhost name servers. You will need two, and they
are currently:
ns1.Dynerhost
ns2.Dynerhost
Most registrars allow you to change this information online.
- How do I password protect
a directory?
There are many scripts available to help you password protect a directory.
For the most part, they all use .htaccess and .htpasswd files to accomplish
this. A good place to start looking for an application to do this would
be http://www.hotscripts.com. If you are familiar with the Linux shell
(command prompt) then you can password protect directories using an
.htaccess file
- I can't connect via Telnet!
Why?
Telnet sessions are not encrypted, therefore hackers are able to "sniff" your
username and password as you log in. Because of this, dynerhost has
instituted SSH in it's place. SSH is very much like Telnet, however
it is encrypted. It does require a client program, and we recommend
Putty. It is available for free at:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/
You will need to change the default SSH version to 2 also as Dynerhost
servers will not accept version 1 due to some security holes.
- Do you support forum scripts?
Yes, we support many of the common forum scripts available. These include
vBulletin, Ikonboard (mySQL version only), phpBB, phpBB2, YABB, and
others. If you have any questions regarding whether or not we support
your particular forum script, just email us at sales@dynerhost.
- What versions of software
are running on the server?
Apache 1.3.19
Sendmail 8.11.6
Proftpd 1.2.2
Majordomo 1.94.5
Openssl 0.9.6
FrontPage 5.0
mySQL 3.23.36
Imap 2000c
Mod_perl 1.24
Mod_php 4.0.6
Python 2.1.1
Perl 5.6.0

- I am trying to use a SSI
call to invoke a cgi script, but it is not
working.
When using a SSI call to invoke a cgi script, the first thing to check
is the path that you are using to call the cgi-script. By default,
the server assumes that the the directory root is the web root, and
does NOT require the absolute path. For example, if you were calling
a test.cgi file in the cgi-bin directory, the path would be /cgi-bin/test.cgi, NOT /home/virtual/domain.com/var/www/cgi-bin/test.cgi.
- I am trying to create a
directory outside of the web root, so that
it will not be accessible from the Internet.
I can't seem to get it to work.
The proper place to put directories that you don't want web accesible,
is in /var/www/, however this directory is initially owned by root
to prevent accidental deletion or corruption. If you would like to
create directories in /var/www/, just send an email to support@dynerhost
and ask that the permissions be changed on the directory to let you
do so.

Email Questions
- What is my POP3 server name?
Your POP3 server is used for incoming email and the name is mail.yourdomain.com.
Enter this setting in the approprate area within your email program.
- What is my SMTP server name?
Your SMTP server name is mail.yourdomain.com. It is used for outgoing
mail and is usually set in the same place as your POP3 server name.
- What is the path to Sendmail?
For any scripts that you install which require the path to sendmail
use :
/usr/sbin/sendmail
- How do I create a catch-all
email address?
By default, a "catch-all" email account is set up with your initial
user ID. This means that email sent to anything@yourdomain.com will
be delivered to your primary ID.This can be modified in your control
panel.
- Is there a way that I can
access my email via the web?
Yes. All accounts come with webmail installed. We use SquirrelMail
to provide this service and it can be accessed at the following address:
http://www.yourdomain.com/webmail
It's important to note that if you intend to also check your email
via a client application such as Eudora or Microsoft Outlook, you will
need to change your settings to leave email on the server for a period
of time. Depending on how regularly you check email, 10-15 days is
usually sufficient.
- I try to send mail using
Outlook, but get an error. I can receive email.
This is usually just a matter of properly configuring your Outlook
mail client (or Outlook Express). To ensure better security, Dynerhost
mail servers require the use of SMTP authentication. This is an option
in the configuration settings for your mail program and usually says "My
outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication."
- Why can't I receive email
at mail@mydomain.com?
By default, our systems us the "mail" account as a standard system
account. This unfortunately prevents the use of the "mail" account
as a stand alone account. If you require the use of the "mail" address,
open a support ticket requesting it, and we can forward it to an account
of your choice. Be sure to include the account name that you want mail
addressed to mail@yourdomain.com to.

Billing and Accounts
- How can I change my personal
information?
Send an email to support@dynerhost requesting the change. Be sure to
include your secret word, domain name, the old information and the
new information. Also, please use the email account that you entered
when signing up.
- How do I cancel my account?
You may cancel your account at any time by sending an email to cancel@dynerhost.
Be sure to provide your secret word, domain name, username, and effective
date of cancellation. We do not provide partial refunds, so your
account will remain available through the end of your billing cycle
should you change your mind. Also, although not required, we would
be interested to know why you are cancelling your account. We are
always looking for ways to make our service better.
- How do I change my credit
card information?
To change your credit card information, send an email to support@dynerhost.
Do not include your credit card information in the email. We will respond
with instructions for changing the information.
- Can I upgrade/downgrade my
account?
Most certainly. If you feel that a different plan would suit you better,
just send us an email at support@dynerhost with what you are looking
for and we will be happy to help. If your needs are not met by one
of our standard plans, we will also be happy to work with you to create
a custom plan that will.
Due to the way credit card processing works, we can not change the
amount charged to a credit card without your permission. Because of
this, if the change results in a different cost, the old reoccuring
charge will be stopped, and a new one must be started.
- How will I be charged if
I exceed my plans allocations?
In most cases we will contact you the first month that you exceed the
bandwidth or disk space that is allocated to you and offer for you
to upgrade to the next plan or one that fits your needs without incurring
any penalties. In the second month that you exceed your allocation,
you will receive an electronic invoice which you can pay online by
credit card.
If you consistently exceed your plans allocations Dynerhost may request
that you upgrade to a more appropriate plan to reduce the administration
required to keep up with these extra charges.
*Dynerhost does not limit the amount of bandwidth that is used and
the customer accepts full responsibility for any charges that are incurred
for exceeding what is allocated.
